Botanical Name: Juglans nigra
Plant Family: Juglandaceae (Walnut family)
Origin
Black Walnut is native to North America, particularly the eastern and central regions of the United States, including areas stretching from the Northeast down through the Southeast and into the Midwest. It has long been recognized as both a valuable hardwood tree and a traditional botanical resource.
Indigenous communities and early American herbal traditions utilized various parts of the Black Walnut tree, including the bark, leaves, and outer hulls of the nut. The green outer hull, which surrounds the walnut shell, became especially known in traditional herbal practices for its strong, astringent, and cleansing properties.
Historically, Black Walnut Hull was used in both topical preparations and internal herbal traditions, often in carefully measured and intentional applications rather than casual daily use.
